چکیده
Greif, Avner, and Tadelis, Steven—A theory of moral persistence: Crypto-morality and political legitimacy Why, how, and under what conditions do moral beliefs persist despite institutional pressure for change? Why do the powerful often fail to promote the morality of their authority? This paper addresses these questions by presenting the role of crypto-morality in moral persistence. Crypto-morality is the secret adherence to one morality while practicing another in public. A simple overlapping generations model is developed to examine the conditions under which crypto-morality is practiced, decays and influences the direction of moral change. We demonstrate the empirical relevance of crypto-morality by discussing the moral foundations of political legitimacy in various historical episodes. Joshua Greene has argued that several lines of empirical research, including his own fMRI studies of brain activity during moral decisionmaking, comprise strong evidence against the legitimacy of deontology as a moral theory. This is because, Greene maintains, the empirical studies establish that “typically deontological” moral thinking is driven by prepotent emotional reactions which are not a...

This article contends that legitimacy in the exercise of power comes from the consent of those subject to it. In global health, this implies that the participation of poor country citizens is required for the legitimacy of major actors and institutions. But a review of institutions and processes suggests that this participation is limited or absent. Particularly because of the complex political...

In the second chapter, I analyze his account of the morality of killing in war. I begin the first chapter by contrasting Walzer’s account of state legitimacy and humanitarian intervention with that of David Luban. Next, I develop a Rawlsian account of state legit...
متن کاملStatement of the Negative Theory of Ethics in Sadra’s Wisdom
By analyzing the issue of annihilation as the end of moral action, this article pays attention to a new interpretation of Sadra’s mystical moral system. In order to reach his ultimate happiness, man must destroy the degrees of his existence: absence of form, absence of self, and absence of spirit. These steps, which are equivalent to natural death, destruction of the human self and annihilation...
